The 2018 Malanser Pinot Noir Selvenen is from a plot planted with younger French clones and 52-year-old Swiss vines. Compared to the Fidler and the Michel, this is another world in terms of flavors and texture. The Selvenen is far behind in its development to those and opens with a deep, pure and spicy, darker-toned and more toasty bouquet of black cherries and crushed black pepper. Silky, round and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense, even juicy but tightly structured Pinot with a ripe fruit complex and firm tannins that possibly also come from the oak barrels that are still present here. The finish is tight, concentrated and very long, revealing tension, energy and a stormy youth. 93-94/100 (02.2020)
Tasted from barrel, the 2018 Malanser Pinot Noir Selvenen is perfectly ripe on the nose, displaying deep cherry and black berry aromas. On the palate, this is a powerful, lush, very intense and fleshy Pinot. The grapes were picked about four weeks earlier than normal—the Burgundy clones were picked on September 11, followed by the Swiss clones a week later. The wine has ripe, concentrated fruit and is pretty promising but still reductive. 93-94/100 (11.2018)
