The 2004 Barolo Fossati Case Nere Riserva 10 anni comes from a more balanced vintage (without big heat spikes) that shows a pretty garnet color. The structure is there and the bouquet is ever changing and fluid. There’s a hint of dark fruit followed by spice, cola, dark truffle with tar notes of black granite and pencil shaving. This is second year this wine is produced. The wine is bottled after 24 months in oak and rests in bottle for six to seven years. There’s a lot a fresh fruit left, despite its age. The 2004 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati/Case Nere is one of the real surprises in this tasting, as it is more refined than I remembered it. Lifted, expressive aromatics, silky texture and mid-weight structure are some of the signatures. The Fossati/Case Nere isn't one of the biggest or most powerful Barolos in the range, but it is among the most polished. This wine has really come together nicely since I first tasted it some years ago. In my view, Fossati and Case Nere don't have the same pedigree as some of the other sites Voerzio works with, which makes this showing all the more impressive. (5.2014) 95/100 - vinous.com

What a pleasure it is to taste the 2004 Barolo Riserva Fossati/Case Nere at this early stage. From one of the all-time great Voerzio vintages, the Fossati/Case Nere graces the palate with exquisite finesse, grace and class. Today, the 2004 is of course quite young, but the wine's balance and layered personality are simply exquisite. Recent bottles of the 2003 have been superb, so I can only imagine what the 2004 might be like when it starts hitting their stride a few years from now. (01.2014) 96/100 - vinous.com

The 2004 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati Case Nere from Roberto Voerzio shows all of the qualities that have always made this vintage so appealing; expressive aromatics, nuanced fruit and silky, totally finessed tannins. A wine of texture, the 2004 is at least a few years from showing all of its cards, but it is strikingly beautiful all the same. (01.2014) 96/100 - vinous.com
