Tasting notes
Picked three times longer than normal due to fussy selections, the ruby-colored 2016 Pinot Noir Malans Unique offers an intense and sweet, perfectly ripe and concentrated cassis and cherry bouquet paired with purity and flinty/smoky notes of crushed stones, red meat and bacon. Full-bodied, tightly woven and tensioned with firm but crunchy tannins, blackcurrant juice and fine toast aromas, this is an intense and sustainable, powerful and sweet Pinot Noir that in the end benefited from an extremely warm and dry summer, whereas the spring was cool and rainy with lots of Peronospora problems. It's less delicate than 2014 but with concentration, grip and aging potential. A wine to keep. 13.5% stated alcohol. Magnum 94/100 (06.2022) - robertparker.com
The dark ruby colored 2016 Pinot Noir Unique displays perfectly ripe, refined and beautifully spicy fruit on the nose, with dark berry and cherry aromas and the spiciness of slate and toast. This is a gorgeous mix of intensity and purity as well as generosity and precision. On the palate, this Pinot is amazingly pure, fresh and silky textured but also fruity and transparent, with great finesse and intensity. It's almost incredible that this wine was aged in 100% new oak (which was medium and even more light toasting), because you simply don't get any toasty flavors. 93/100 (02.2019)
