From calcareous marl soils, the 2020 Wittnau Büel opens with a still reductive, pretty close yet intense and concentrated nose of ripe fruits with some untamed notes in the beginning but an expressive chalkiness after a while that indicate a profound and complex white. Full-bodied, dense and enormously complex on the palate, with concentrated lemon aromas and a sustainable mineral structure with amazing salinity, this is a powerful but elegant and balanced Chardonnay that is one of the very finest produced in all of Switzerland that year. There is absolutely stunning complexity from 23-year-old vines. What a great success, not just for Tom but also for the Aargau as a wine region, where Tom Litwan is now the uncrowned king. This had whole-cluster pressing and was fermented and aged in Burgundian barrels for one year without racking. 1,062 bottles were filled in April 2022. 95/100 (02.2023)
