Tasted as a sample in February 2020, Georg Fromm's 2018 Malanser Pinot Noir Michel is a first release of this vineyard, which is kind of an extension of the Spielmann vineyard but entirely planted with Swiss clones. The soil has a higher content of clay than the Spielmann or Schöpfi vineyards have. The bouquet displays an intense, ripe and aromatic cherry aroma with red and black currant notes. Full-bodied and round on the palate, with fine tannin and good freshness, this is a fruit-intense and charming Blauburgunder with nice reduction at this stage. The wine is silky and fresh with finely extracted and well-integrated tannins yet less tension and complexity than the Fidler or, in particular, the neighboring Spielmann, which is planted with French clones. The 2018 was fermented on 10% whole clusters. 91-92/100 (02.2020)
From 20-year-old Swiss clones on clay, slate and limestone soils and aged in 33% new 225-liter barrels, the 2019 Malanser Pinot Noir Michel is only the second release of this cru. The nose is beautifully pure, refined and fragrant, displaying a beautiful mix of red berries, flowers, flint and crushed stones. Seamless on the nose and lush, refined and stunningly intense and complex on the palate, this is a serious Swiss Pinot with firm and refreshing tannins intertwined with the salty-mineral acidity that seems to be driven by both slate and limestone. This is an excellent, adorable Pinot with so much tension, grip and finesse. Only 900 bottles were produced. 13.3% alcohol. 93/100 (02.2022)

Neighboring the Spielmann but planted entirely with Swiss clones 20+ years ago, the 2020 Michel Malanser Pinot Noir is a bright to medium ruby-colored Pinot with a dense, darker toned and spicy yet aromatic bouquet of ripe cherry and currant aromas intermingled with notes of Swiss nougat, crushed slate and dried herbs. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, juicy and savory, quite charming Pinot with silky tannins, very fine terroir acidity and a powerful and sustainably structured finish. Due to the more clayey soils of the Michel Vineyard, this Pinot has more power, density, structure and length compared to the Spielmann. 13.4% stated alcohol. 93/100 (02.2023)
