Studach - Completer 2022

StudacThe 2022 Malanser Completer is a comparatively tamed interpretation of the rare grape variety that Thomas Studach planted in 1994 and again, as a substitute for Merlot, in 2013. The result is 1,000 to 1,200 liters per year and, in 2022, relatively moderate acidity of less than 10 grams per liter (the grape can easily deliver 11-12 grams per liter). Picked late at 100° to 105° Oechsle, left in the press overnight and fermented in stainless steel prior to aging on the lees in Swiss barriques for one year, the wine opens with clear, bright, fine, elegant and concentrated fruit intertwined with coolish, stony and flinty notes typical for the Malans terroir. Fiery, dense and enormously powerful on the palate, with tart and concentrated yet not very aromatic or even juicy fruit (quinces) but tense yet ripe acidity and fine but grippy tannins, this is a deep, firmly structured and sustainable Malanser with a very long and complex finish. This fascinating "transgender" wine shows red wine features but is also reminiscent of white wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 96/100 (03.2024) - Wine Advocate
