In 2013, the Barolo Piè Franco is decidedly austere and tannic. Readers should be in no rush to open bottles, not that that should be a problem. Time in the glass brings out the alluring aromatics that are such a signature of the Piè Franco. Although closed down and not fully expressive, the 2013 is a Barolo of haunting beauty. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to several decades of exceptional drinking. (10.2017)
The 2013 Barolo Piè Franco has a bit more tannic spine and energy than the Rupestris tasted alongside it. Fresh, brisk and beautifully delineated, the 2013 has been nothing less than utterly exquisite on both occasions I have tasted it recently. If the past is any indication, the 2013 will almost certainly gain volume with further time in bottle I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle any time soon and imagine the 2013 will still be striking several decades from now. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate. (11.2016)
